My first Thanksgiving

During one Thanksgiving it happend that I was on Kauai. It was another trip to my future home, but again “just” a visit… So it wasn’t really planned, but as the third thursday in November was getting closer, I was somehow happy to experience this big holiday with my fiance. He himself certainly had dozens of those family-days in his US-life, but I was excited. We did not intend to broil a turkey or do similar common things – and so we even forgot to plan the day. We dilly-dallied that thursday, searching for a barstool or two at a second hand store. What we found there instead was an used Walt Disney Micky Mouse waffle iron. Beautiful. We left the store – it was hold by the Salvation Army – with a smile, and as we stepped out we saw in the bigger house next door a lot of people gathering. It smelled like food, hmm, turkey?! We took a look. The Salvation Army served today of course a Thanksgiving dish for the people – and for free. 🙂 Turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy and stuffing – a funny bread topping, what I never had before in my life. Same as I never had that kind of pumpkin pie as dessert. The helpers there were about to clean the kitchen and already tidied up the food output as we entered the room. I don’t know if we looked in a certain way or even needy…but we got two big portions of the holiday-meal! 🙂 And as we sat on the porch outside with our packed trays I was so delighted: my first Thanksgiving – and magically I even got an traditional dish! It was no “haute cuisine”, but enough to give me the corresponding feeling, like one next step of getting familiar with US-habits. For me it all sudden was a very special first Thanksgiving, because the Salvation Army not only gave me food but let me find the awesome breakfast beautifier Micky Mouse… 😉

Today i remembered my first Thanksgiving as I saw another house from the Salvation Army. Ryan with our happy meals.
And our precious Thanksgiving deal – the Micky Mouse waffle iron – helps me to have some great american breakfast.
